SAIL TECHNOLOGY
The process of making sails is very much the same, and at the same
time very different, as it has been for centuries. The process
still begins with a fiber and ends with the creation of a 3 dimensional
membrane. Of course cotto n and flax have given way to
Kevlar and Carbon and hand layout to computer design.
Recent developments in fiber and construction technology have had a
profound impact on the number of options available to the modern
sailmaker. Dacron, Carbon, Kevlar, Twaron, and Technora are just some examples of the fiber choices
available today. Cross-cut, bi-radial, tri-radial, and custom
fiber oriented laminates are some of the many construction
options. The modern sailmaker must be proficient in multiple fiber
and construction
options in order to provide his customers with the best possible
sail. At Ullman Sails Virginia we design and build sails
tailored to the specific needs of each of our customers utilizing a
broad range of modern technology. |
